making maracas for Cinco de Mayo

To help celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year, C and I made maracas at school.  The process is simple.  I'm sure lots of people do this, but I got the idea from Dana.

Grab a plastic easter egg.   Fill it with beans, rice, birdseed, or another noisy object and close it up.

Shake, shake shake!

Encase the egg in two plastic spoons.  Use colored or masking tape to keep the spoons around the egg.  The spoon handles will make the handle of the maraca.  I pulled out all of the stops and let my class use Sharpies (with supervision!) to decorate their maracas.  This worked best with white tape.

The kids had a blast making music, and we compared the sounds we got from the different fillers we used.
